The Cartographer's Complaint
Every map is a lie told carefully. The projection you choose decides which countries look important, and no projection is innocent. MOCKSRV::html-canonical::OK
On scale
A map at 1:1 is useless, which is the first honest thing anyone learns about abstraction. Detail is not the same as truth.
- Mercator flatters the poles.
- Peters flatters the equator.
- Both flatter their authors.
On borders
Borders are the only feature on a map that can be moved by argument alone.
The map is not the territory, but it is what gets funded.
